Rotary Wildfire Safety is dedicated to helping our mountain community prepare for the possibility of a wildfire disaster. We are Rotarians and community members from Conifer, Evergreen and Bailey; working to improve wildfire safety since 2020.
- We researched risk models that insurance companies use and we found them seriously wrong. We convinced legislators that it is in everyone's interest for these risk models to be accurate. A major victory for Colorado homeowners: new legislation effective July 2026 requires insurance companies to prove their wildfire risk models accurate, and tell customers what mitigation, home hardening and fuel breaks are needed to protect their homes.
- We helped arrange installation of wildfire-spotting cameras on nearby mountains.
- We argued for more wildfire spending by the county, resulting in increased wildfire staff from 1 to 36. Jefferson County now has planners, educators as well as wildland fire crews, who also will thin trees along evacuation routes.
- We are campaigning to improve CDOT’s mission of transportation safety to include the safety of people fleeing wildfire. We want CDOT to thin trees along evacuation routes that it controls, and to help others do it. CDOT controls all state and federal highways, including U.S. 285, I-70, Colorado 74, U.S. 40, and U.S. 6.
- And, very important: we need to resolve the potential catastrophe of another failure of cell and internet if they occur during high winds such as December 2025.
