Program:  Jamal Bowen, First-Year Experience Program at the Community College of Denver

  • Jamal Bowen grew up in Montbello in Denver and attended Denver Public Schools which shaped who he is today. Jamal graduated from CSU in 2013 and then obtained his masters in Organizational Management from Ashford University, School of Business and Technology in 2016. He teaches Business and Entrepreneurship at Community College of Denver and is here to tell us about the First Year Experience program. He’s also Morti’s nephew!
  • The  First Year Experience program at Community College of Denver is aimed at helping new students to be successful at CCD
  • There are a range of students and backgrounds that can participate
  • The program creates clear milestones to track towards to help with career exploration and study skills. Meeting students where they are and pushing them in a way that makes them successful. Break down a semester plan and helps them to “start here, go anywhere”
  • Jamal teaches business and they had an opportunity to collaborate with DU. Some CCD students had never been there, and they were working on an event to present to the community and they were all very proud because his students stood out.
  • Milestones are bundled into a course with a FYE professor that teaches with a content professor. FYE is there to assist and help out along the way throughout the course. FYE Course is geared at teaching study skills and career skills but counts towards certificate/degree programs so the content teacher doesn’t have to take time away from their content. aka business or sociology
  • This goes a long way in giving these new students confidence which in turns sets them up for better success in school.
  • They have seen the growth in their students, but the biggest thing is the testimony they’ve seen with their students.
  • They are putting together a promotional video, if anyone knows of students who may be interested these are opportunities that are being provided to everyone!
